A NEW FLOCK OF BIRDS CREATED AT THE FLORENCE GRISWOLD MUSEUM

Young artists at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT crafted a beautiful flock of birds. Five first grade students learning to sew for the first time designed these beautiful birds. At the end of class, after the photo shoot, one young artist exclaimed to his new friends, "You know, I am a true artist!"

Summer Day

Even though this piece has been posted before it just feels right again today. It is a beautiful summer day!

Monday, April 25, 2011

Since April 4, my mind is focusing on a vocabulary which includes sacromere, origin and insertion points, quadratus lumborum and erector spinae. Add them to the Karvonen formula, BMR=RMR+PAL+TEF, acetycholine and sarcoplasmic reticulum and you get the idea I am studying and not sewing! Sensing a small frustration beginning to emerge as my creativity time is extremely limited my husband bought me a wonderful book for Easter; A Daily Creativity Journal, 365 Make Something Every Day and Change Your Life! by Noah Scalin. Day One: "make something that fits in the palm of your hand using only the material in your immediate environment." The eggs in my refrigerator were still white so on Easter Sunday I dyed my eggs in spinach, turmeric and coffee. Not my usual amount of creativity time but it felt good to "make" something pretty and do something other than study!

New York State of Mind

Some days I wake up and wish I was in NYC, this is one of those days. Several years ago I met my son, who was then attending college in the city, in Central Park to walk through The Gates. It was a day like this; blue sky, chilly but not bone chilling and some snow on the ground. I made this piece a couple of years ago for a photo challenge and pulled it out today to think about NYC and that day. We had such a nice time!

A Bag for ME

Three predicaments confronted me today. One was snow storm....duh?! it's CT 2011.... two, my muse appears to be on vacation.... and three, the snow has held up the UPS truck carrying some fabric I am anxiously waiting for. I need to design and create two new pieces for a show opening February 2! Soooo, because it is a snow day and I can't get out I decided to gather all my African jacquard batik scraps left over from a quilt I recently made and made myself a gym bag. I have been going to the gym lately and enjoy every minute but the place needs some color! My bag will be just the thing to make me extra happy when I carry my things to the gym. Except for a few pieces of fabric used in this bag many of these luscious fabrics came from Cultured Expressions http://culturedexpressions.com I put the scraps in a pile and began making squares. When all the squares were finished I squared them off to 61/2 inches and sewed them together. I used the smaller bits for the handles, found some cotton fabric for the lining, also from Africa, brought back from Mozambique by my daughter, added some pockets to the lining then sewed the bag together. Our driveway is clear, the roads are clear and we are off to the gym. My ipod was the first thing packed. I don't think the gym would be so much fun without my music!!

Sisters In Cloth present TEXTile

Sisters In Cloth has a exhibit, TEXTile, at the Guilford Library, Guilford, CT during the month of December. Our challenge was to create a piece using text, each piece was to have at least one character somewhere on the piece. My piece, Good Morning Sunshine has the words written on three leaves. The piece is made from batiks from Ghana.

HOMELESS

I don't often venture away from fiber on my blog but this video is near and dear to my heart. I volunteer weekly at a shelter, for mothers and children, which was recently visited by CNN Money. I have been volunteering for three years and the increase for mothers and children needing shelter over the last year is staggering. Please watch the video and if you can help out a shelter in your area, please do.

ANNIE MAME

www.anniemame.com/2010/07/25/fiber-art-taken-to-a-whole-new-level/

Ann Nyberg hosts this fabulous website and shares with her readers interesting stories highlighting people and places in Connecticut. I am proud to share that I am the newest story. Ann came to my studio, took many photos, asked me some questions and even took a video of me asking about my interest in this art form. It was a wonderful Sunday afternoon. One mention from our mutual friend Lisa and I was Ann's new story. Thank you, Lisa and thank you, Ann.
